Mössbauer Group

Our 155Gd Mössbauer system came on line in August 2009.
This is our sixth non-standard Mössbauer isotope,
and our fifth cold-source Mössbauer isotope.
155Gd Mössbauer uses the 86.56 keV level which is populated by the β-decay of 4.753 year 155Eu.

This isotope was prepared by neutron irradiation of 154Sm as 154SmPd3 in the NRU reactor at Chalk River.
The spectra at the left are our first set of test data.
Starting from the top, we show:

A simple quadrupole "doublet" from Gadolinium Stannate (Gd2Sn2O7)

A two-site fit to a paramagnetic sample of cubic Gadolinium Oxide (Gd2O3)

A magnetic pattern with no quadrupole interaction for GdFe2

The velocity scale was determined using simultaneous laser calibration. The samples and source were held at 5 K.
