Subject: [Ipp] IPP preparations for the NSERC sponsored SAP long range planning exercise

Dear IPP Members,

As you know, one of the main missions of the IPP is to "maximise the
impact of Canadian particle physics by ... organising long-range
planning that articulates the community=92s scientific priorities"
(cf. http://www.ipp.ca/about/mission.shtml).

To this end, at our recent Council meeting we discussed the IPP's
response to NSERC's announcement that they are sponsoring another
subatomic physics long range planning exercise in 2010/2011
(http://www.ipp.ca/pdfs/NSERC_2011_SAP_LRP.pdf). In preparing the
input we've been asked to provide we will, of course, prepare a broad
survey of all particle physics projects underway in Canada as well as
the role of particle theory.

As we've done in the past, we're planning to host a one-day IPP Town
Hall meeting where we'll have the opportunity to hear from the current
IPP projects as well as other projects of interest to Canadian
particle physicists. The meeting will be held on Friday June 11, in
Toronto, in conjunction with this year's CAP meeting. I am working
with Isabel Trigger (this year's PPD chair) to coordinate this and
other IPP meetings to avoid overlap with the PPD physics sessions.
More details will be provided in the early spring.

Subsequent to the town-hall meeting Council and I will work to digest
the input and prepare a brief for NSERC's SAP long range planning
committee over the summer. This will be made available to the IPP
community for comment prior to submission in the early fall. Beyond
that, members of Council and I will do what we can to ensure that our
vision for the coming decade is fairly reflected at all subsequent
stages of the long range planning process.

Looking forward to your input to the IPP component of the plan over
the next eight months. Please mark June 11 on your calendars and do
what you can to join us for, what I hope will be a good set of
discussions of how we see Canadian particle physics evolving in the
coming decade.

William
(on behalf of Council)
