2002 Summer Student Job in Particle Physics with McGill University |
Development and Testing
of a Spark Chamber
http://www.physics.mcgill.ca/~corriveau/projects/summer_student_2002b.html
A summer job position is opened in the experimental group of particle
physics, at the Department of Physics of McGill University.
The particle physics group consists of five faculty members involved
in three international fundamental research projects.
The job would entail completing the installation and testing of a data
acquisition system of a
spark chamber
used in the detection and visualisation of cosmic muons.
This projects involves a chain of proved methods and techniques
of experimental particle physics: mechanical assembly of the chamber,
the scintillators, implementation of the electronics, and high
voltages, efficiency tests, data acquisition on a PC and analysis of the
results on UNIX machines.
The data are taken with sonic detectors (piezzo-sensors) but could
alternatively be taken with a digital camera.
The angular dependence of the cosmic muon flux can be measured with
the detector.
The chamber will also be used as demonstration device in the department
and in other academic projects.
It also constitutes an introduction to a useful technique that might be
used in a future linear collider detector.
The work would be performed in the physics department under the
supervision of a faculty member.
Other colleagues and students are also part of the working
environment and could answer to questions from the student.
The working language in the department is normally English,
but French is also frequently used.
The physics student will have working room in the group lab and
access to all equipment, facilities and computers as needed.
The student should be especially interested, motivated and willing
to take initiative.
