Don Marolf Syracuse Certain arguments involving charge conservation suggest that, for certain intersecting brane configurations in string theory, one might generate branes carrying only half of the fundamental unit of charge. We investigate one such case in detail using techniques from M-theory, and find a topological restriction that requires such branes to arise in bound pairs. Thus, the total charge appears in integer units of the fundamental charge.
