Quintessence or cosmological constant -
what is the dark energy in the universe?

Christof Wetterich

Cosmological observations suggest the presence of a homogeneous dark energy component. We review the idea that a slowly evolving scalar field is of cosmological relevance today. We discuss questions of naturalness of this scenario and its compatibility with recent cosmological observations in comparison with a cosmological constant.
