Physical Society ColloquiumInterview for Faculty PositionNeutron Stars in X-ray BinariesBob RutledgeCaltechConstraining the cold dense matter equation of state has long been a goal of studying the densest known objects in the universe -- neutron stars. Different EOSs predict different mass-radius relations, and so measurements of both together, or even precise measurements of the radius alone, provide useful constraints. I will describe observations of neutron stars with the high resolution, large area X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM, with focus on neutron stars located in low mass binaries. These promise to teach us about the physics of the neutron star crust, about neutron star cooling mechanisms, and to provide precise neutron star radius measurements.
