The Physics of Atoms Confined to One Dimension

Mara Prentiss

Harvard

Three dimensional samples of ultra-cold atoms have already radically transformed low energy physics. Recent developments allow us to create samples that are essentially one dimensional. These new samples offer substantial technological advantages over three dimensional samples, and open up a new regime where collisions and state distributions are radically different than they are in three dimensions.
