Physical Society Colloquium
Marc Nantel Photonics Research Ontario/University of Toronto Shortly after its introduction in the early 60's, the laser was described as "a solution looking for a problem". Since then, lasers have successfully found - and solved! - quite a few, spanning a wide range of scientific, medical and industrial applications. In this lecture, we will explore the basic principle of quantum optics - the science of lasers - with a particular emphasis on the relatively new ultrashort pulse lasers. We will also look at some of their applications to laboratory astrophyics, ophthalmology and laser micromachining.
