On 4d/2d correspondence with 8 and 4 supercharges

We discuss N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four and two dimensions with different matter content and relationship between their BPS spectra. This duality has been demonstrated both from string theory constructions and by means of pure field theoretical methods. In the latter a 1+1 dimensional vortex string is constructed which supports the above mentioned two dimensional theories. Then we address physics with fewer supersymmetry — N=1 in 4d and (0,2) in 2d. We argue that the 4d/2d correspondence survives in this case as well albeit in the weaker form.

In the end we consider the Nekrasov-Shatashvili deformation of N=2 gauge theories and investigate two-dimensional gauge theories which give rise to integrable system emerging from the NS quantization using both branes and vortex strings.
