Orientifolds and Bubbling Geometries in String Theory

In this talk I will describe some string backgrounds involving “orientifolds”- hypersurfaces which reverse the orientation of a string. A large family of such backgrounds preserving supersymmetry has been shown to exist, and could be useful in constructing new compactifications.
