Particle production in field theories coupled to strong external sources

Multi-particle production in QCD at high energies can be understood in the framework of particle production in field theories with strong time dependent sources. We discuss analytical and numerical studies in this framework and comment on their implications for the interpretation of current experiments at RHIC and future experiments at the LHC.
