It includes a main campus in the center of Montréal, and the Macdonald campus, located in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, approximately 35km west of downtown Montréal. The downtown campus is situated on the southeast foothill of Mont Royal and is a green oasis within easy walking distance of the commercial, cultural, and residential heart of the bustling metropolis of Montréal. It is an English language university in a city with a population which is two-thirds French-speaking; thus, it is an excellent place to profit from the interaction of two flourishing Canadian cultures. McGill is a public university founded in 1821. The university has an enrollment of about 40,000 students from more than 150 countries. It has approximately 1,700 faculty members, 12 faculties, 10 schools and 4 affiliated teaching hospitals. McGill University is one of the oldest, best-known, and most prestigious of Canadian universities. Montreal: the world's number-one student city in 2017. It is also worth noting that Montréal is the only Canadian city ranked as one of the best 10 cities to study in the world listed in the QS World Best Student Cities rankings taking into account student mix, quality of living, employer activity and affordability. Other university facilities available to students are the gymnasium, athletic facilities, swimming pools, a stadium and a hockey arena. There is also a Graduate Student Centre, Thomson House, containing recreation facilities, meeting rooms and a licensed bar. HousingOne of the many advantages of life in Montréal lies in its modest cost of living. Housing, for example, is available close to campus at much more reasonable rates than in most major Canadian cities. In addition, McGill has several co-educational residences and owns a number of apartment buildings near the campus which are reserved for married graduate students. There is usually a waiting list so those interested are encouraged to apply early.
