Call for Applications: BIPOC Physics Research Awards 2023
McGill's Department of Physics is calling for applications from undergraduate
students for the inaugural BIPOC Physics Research Awards.
The BIPOC Physics Research Awards are a unique opportunity for undergraduate
students who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Colour) to
gain invaluable research experience while working on cutting-edge projects
under the supervision of Department of Physics professors.
Award recipients will also be able to participate in the
Undergraduate Summer Program,
run jointly by the Department of Physics and the Trottier Space Institute. The
primary goals of this weekly seminar series are to provide guidance and
mentorship for students at the earliest stage of their research careers,
and foster a sense of community among our summer researchers. The program
culminates each year in a research showcase.
Research Areas & Supervisors:
Summer undergraduate researchers can work with any faculty member in the
Department of Physics. Applicants do not need any past research experience,
and help will be provided to find a successful match with a group based on
research interests.
The full list of Physics faculty members is available here:
https://www.physics.mcgill.ca/people/faculty-a.html.
A list of the Department of Physics’s main research areas is available here:
https://www.physics.mcgill.ca/research/.
We recommend visiting professors’ research websites to learn more about
what they work on. Some examples of available summer research projects with
Physics professors can be found here:
https://www.physics.mcgill.ca/ugrads/usra/.
Note that the BIPOC Physics Research Awards are separate from the NSERC USRA
program and the Faculty of Science SURA awards described at
https://www.physics.mcgill.ca/ugrads/usra/.
Students who self-identify as
Black or Indigenous are particularly encouraged to apply for an NSERC USRA,
as NSERC strongly supports applications from these students.
Value of the Award:
Undergraduates selected for the award will receive a total stipend of $7000
for the whole summer. Projects are typically carried out over 14 to 16 weeks
during the summer (starting on or around the first week of May).
Deadline to apply:
March 3, 2023 (11:59 pm EST)
Who can apply:
Students who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Colour) and are
currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at McGill University are eligible
to apply. The award is open to both Canadian and international students.
Applicants do not need any past research experience, and help will be provided
to find a successful match with a group based on research interests. While
there is no strict GPA cut-off, we expect most applicants will have a CGPA
above 3.0. However, students with lower GPAs are encouraged to apply and may
explain their academic path in the “Additional Information”
section of the application form.
