PHYS 182 - Our Evolving Universe

PHYS 182 - Our Evolving Universe Phys 182 is, together with Phys 183, the successor to the very popular `Planets, Stars, and Galaxies'. Taking an earth-outward approach that parallels the historic development of astronomy and astrophysics, they provide an introduction to:
  • positional astronomy and observation;
  • our evolving picture of the Universe;
  • the properties and origins of the solar system;
  • how stars work;
  • stellar birth and evolution;
  • stellar death: white dwarfs, supernovae, neutron stars, black holes;
  • galactic properties, structure and interactions;
  • stellar clusters;
  • the interstellar medium;
  • modern cosmology: the Big Bang & and evolution of the Universe.
The bold-faced bullets above are the topics covered in the fall-term PHYS 182.
