PHYS 214 - Introductory Astrophysics

PHYS 214 - Introductory Astrophysics This course provides an introduction to astronomy and astrophysics at an elementary level, assuming only CEGEP-level physics and mathematics as background.

After an overview of some basic astrophysics, such as the nature of light and matter, and observational techniques and facilities, topics will include stars, stellar evolution, compact objects, planets, the Milky Way, galaxies, galaxy evolution, Big Bang cosmology.

Evaluation will be based on problem sets involving relatively straight-forward mathematics (calculus is assumed), one mid-term, and a three-hour final exam.
