PHYS 184 - Energy and the Environment

PHYS 184 - Energy and the Environment This general interest course will explore the physics of energy and the environment. It will focus on a quantitative understanding of basic physical concepts that will allow us to understand and study energy production and related environmental issues from a Canadian perspective. The course will not focus on energy or environmental policy. The course will cover:
  • energy mechanics, heat and work
  • energy creation, use, and conservation
  • fossil fuels, air quality
  • solar power, conversion to electricity, passive solar
  • wind, geothermal and hydro power
  • the atom and nucleus, nuclear power, fission, radioactive waste
  • home energy conservation
  • off-the-grid small scale power production
  • current and future energy alternatives
The course will include 3 hours of lecture per week and weekly or bi-weekly problem sets which will require basic calculus (CEGEP level).
